7 Ways to Balance your Hormones Naturally

Somedays I feel like I am on the verge of crazy, other days I feel as if I am already there. What is making me feel so crazy? My emotional breakdowns, irregular sleeping patterns, uncontrollable hunger, fluctuating weight, and broken out skin are factors. But, all of these are results of one underlying problem.

I suffer from hormonal imbalances. Might I add that I am pregnant, but pregnant or not, hormones can be irregular.

Hormonal imbalances seem to control every part of my life. My mood, energy, body shape, eating habits, and behavior are all tied to my hormones. When my hormones are imbalanced, so is the rest of my life. I’m sure you all can relate.

Some of you may ask, “what are hormones exactly?” Hormones are chemical messengers that are produced in the body. They communicate and control various bodily functions such as growth, reproduction, metabolism, emotions, and behaviors.

While I can talk about all the different hormones and how they affect different parts of the body, I am going to skip right to the good stuff: What can cause imbalanced hormones; 7 ways to balance your hormones.  If you would like to learn more about different hormones and their effects on the body, click here (this link will redirect you to an external site where you can find more information). Hormones can become imbalanced for many different reasons. The obvious reasons for hormonal changes are menstrual cycles, pregnancy, puberty, and menopause. But things we do and things we eat on the daily can also affect our hormones. I am no doctor, but a girl who has done some research. Here is what I have found:

What can cause hormonal imbalances:

  1. Diet – Diet is extremely important when it comes to being healthy and having a balanced life. Eating natural and nutrient dense foods, preferably organic, is the best option to avoiding hormonal problems caused by food. Processed foods, too much sugar, too many carbs, and unhealthy fats cause hormonal unbalancing.
  2. Toxins – Toxins in our bodies can affect hormones. These toxins enter our bodies from the food, drinks, medications/drug, and alcohol that we consume. Our environment can also be toxic.
  3. Stress – We all know how powerful stress can be. Heavy stress converts progesterone and turns it into cortisol, commonly known as “The Stress Hormone”(Healthcoachfx).
  4. Weight – Being overweight or underweight can cause hormonal imbalances.
  5. Natural Causes – hormonal imbalances can naturally happen when the endocrine system isn’t functioning properly (adrenal glands, pituitary glands, pineal glands, thyroid, hypothalamus glad, etc.).

Ways to balance hormones:

  1. Exercising regularly – exercising can help reduce insulin levels.
  2. Managing stress – Regularly practice stress relieving exercises like working out, meditating, breathing exercises, listening to music, organizing, etc.
  3. Consuming necessary nutrients – Eating a healthy, balanced diet is key to receiving nutrients that your body needs to properly function. Additional supplements can be taken to ensure you are meeting your bodies needs. Vitamin D is a recommended supplement to helps fight depression.
  4. Limiting caffeine – sadly, too much caffeine can interfere with your endocrine system. Try getting natural energy through a green smoothie or taking B6 vitamin supplements.
  5. Essential Oils – according to Dr. Axe, essential oils can be used in the balancing process of hormones.
    1. Clary Sage – Clary Sage is used to balance estrogen because it contains natural plant-derived estrogen called phytoestrogens. This is a good essential oil use during menstrual cycles. Clary Sage can help relieve PMS. Combine this essential oil with coconut oil and use as a topical.
    2. Lavender – Lavender helps neutralize emotions and treat stress. Besides from being my favorite scent, Lavender oil has always helped me feel relaxed. I like to put a few drops of Lavender essential oil into my bath water. Sandalwood essential oil is another good suggestion that works very similarly to Lavender. Use these oils in your bath or diffuse in your home.
    3. Thyme – Thyme oil helps improve the production of the progesterone hormone which links to hair loss, infertility, depression, etc(Dr. Axe). You can add this essential oil to your bath or combine with coconut oil to use as a topical.
  6. Monitor Prescriptions – Birth control is often given to females to regulate the reproductive system, fight acne, and to control endometriosis. Because birth control is an artificial hormone, it directly affects how your body naturally produces hormones. Birth Control may cause hormonal imbalances itself. Be cautious and get to know how your body responds to contraceptives. Other prescribed medications can affect your hormones.
  7. Sleep – It seems to be that rest is the root of all good (besides diet). Getting a good night’s sleep overall helps with proper bodily function.

Although I may not be getting the sleep that I am needing (and some say I never will get enough sleep now that I am pregnant with my first child), I try to make an effort in eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and managing my stress. When I’m feeling a little “crazy,” taking a hot bath seems to calm me down. Another method that works for me is writing my thoughts and feelings down in my journal. A detox method that I would recommend others to try is an ionic bath foot detox. This process pulls heavy metals and other toxins from your foot which supports the overall health of the body, especially the endocrine system.

It is important to keep in mind that everybody is different and that everyone reacts to hormonal changes differently. Find what methods work best for you and practice them regularly.
